Following the airing of Joey last night in the UK, the "METRO" (that crappy free paper they give away on the London Underground) wrote a review, and in true Joey Tribbianni style, it's terrible! One word: HARSH!
A friend in need
Ever since Friends joined Sex And The Ciy in that big of TV heaven known as E4 repeats, I've been desperate for my first fix of Joey - the Friends spin-off series. But sadly, as last night's intro episodes proved, the best things don't always come to those who wait.
Ever-aspiring actor Joey (Matt LeBlanc) heaved his increasingly well-muffined behind off the Central Perk sofa to kickstart his career in Hollywood, hooking up with a new (and cheaper) sitcom family: slutty but stalwart sister Gina (Sopranos star Drea de Matteo) and her possessively loved 20-year-old son Michael (Paulo Costanzo).
If you'd had to spend more TV time with any of the Friends crew I'd have definitely chosen loveable himbo Joey (the thought of a Monica Loves Chandler spin-off would send you crawling up the walls). But judging by these opening episodes - in which uptight virgin Michael becomes Uncle Joey's new roomie; Joey falls for the foxy (but married) lawyer next door; Gina has a boob job; and the writers forget to put in any jokes - his new posse ain't shaping up to make this a new Frasier.
The best bits just ripped off the old Friends dynamic: rocket scientist Michael being basically a smart-but-ill-at-ease-with-girls Ross/Chandler combo. The worst bits played Joey's nice-but-dim card beyond the realms of any credulity ('my new agent's a shark. That means she's a really good agent - not an actual shark').
We're sent further into TV hell by a theme tune with lyrics that seem to go: 'Macho, macho, macho - Everything gonna be all right.' Judging from this opener - it so isn't.
Add this to the 1/5 rating they gave it, I personally thought it was a bit harsh (Joey wasn't that terrible). Does anyone agree or disagree?
