Bigger than Friends?

Friends has had phenomenal success and has brought the actors world fame, so will Joey be able to match the shows achievements? A lot have people have already said how Friends is better but how can you possibly judge from such an early stage? I think that Joey will become, in a rather short amount of time, more popular than Friends ever was. I recently read a review with Matt Le Blanc where he explains that Joey was the least developed character in the cast of Friends and thinks they have enough material to last another 10 years! The show is currently working to get the characters developed, it will take a while for the audience to warm to the characters. There is no denying how popular Friends was, but in all 10 years they didn't change the format at all, so the shows has had the same people (background cast) and suroundings, so Joey new settings should be a welcomed changed, even for the biggest of Friends fans. I think it's obvious that geust appereances will be made and I'm sure someone would of turned up by season 2 (just like in Frasier, and probably other spin-off sitcoms).

So whats your opinion, do you agree with me when I say Joey will inevitably be more successful than Friends? Or do you feel nothing will beat Friends?

I think that Joey was the least developed character and that hurt the show somewhat in the beginning. Once they start to develop the characters more and we get used to seeing them together, the show will get much better. However, I don't think there's anyway Joey will ever surpass Friends.

But after Joey is more established on his own and the show really gets going, i think he could do really well! The reason why Friends succeeded so much is because the cast was an ensemble, there was no principal character, all 6 got the same treats and people liked that (this was even said by Marta Kauffman in the commentaries in the DVDs), there's a reason why the episodes where the 6 are together are the ones people like best.
Joey is clearly not an ensemble, the show is all about Joey (which is the main reason I don't like it), the jokes are old, some are repeated, some are cliches, some are new but way too stupid.
Also, Friends at the end was starting to wear off, and by that I don't mean it was getting boring or anything but they were running out of storylines and coming up with stupid things that didn't make much sense in the story as a whole (i.e. Joey and Rachel). It was pretty clear that the show couldn't have lasted any longer than 10 years (maybe one or 2 more, but not more than that). Making a spinoff of a comedy that is already getting old is not a very good idea in my opinion, yes, people already know the characters and the kind of humor, blah blah blah, but it's harder to come up with more stories for one character that's been around for 10 years than it is to think of new stories for brand new characters. I think Joey won't last longer than 2, maybe 3 seasons (though I doubt it, and if it did last 3 it would be because they try very hard to keep it in the air), and I don't think people will like Joey as much as they liked Friends.
One of the main things about Friends' success is that it was original, nobody had ever come up with anything similar in the 90s and that was the perfect decade to start a show like that. The 2000s are very different, VERY different to the 90s, and Joey isn't all that new and original...

In conclusion, not only I think Joey won't be half as successful as Friends but I also think Joey won't be successful, period.

Yes all shows wear out in time - as you say not meaning a bad thing. I also agree on the R+J thing aswell - to me it was a bit rushed. If they would have had moments of 'will they won't they or tension' in the years before, then yeah, but it doesn't show any of that to me.
Joey is good in places, its not that bad as some say. I don't think it will last to long though.

Yes but you can't compare Joey to Frasier, like I said before in another post, imagine 10 years of Joey, Joey will be 45 ten years from now, if they keep making the same kind of comedy with a 45 year-old, he'd start looking retarded and not funny anymore. If they change it and make him settle down and turn it into a family show, it won't be the same show anymore.
I don't think Joey has enough potencial to become a big success like Friends.
And I think the Frasier thing was parcially luck, it came at the right time, it happened to be just what the public was looking for. Joey isn't what people are looking for, you can tell by the success it's had so far...

I think Friends shouldn't be compared to Cheers and Joey definitely shouldn't be compared to Frasier.

The first season of 'Joey' was, in my opinion, better than the first season of Friends.
But if I compare 'Joey' to other 'Friends'-episodes... I'd have to say that at the moment, I would still prefer Friends, but Joey keeps getting better and better. It might even become a better show than Friends!

Friends is evergreen to my generation.
I can play an old episode and still find it brilliantly funny! It's just really good.

I have to say something....when Joey first started I was really happy and excited....people saying "i don't like the show!" "it's not even funny." "i miss friends." or "today i didn't watch the show and i didn't even miss it. I'll stop watching it" those comments made me a little bit mad...'cause i mean it's Matt LeBlanc with this really lovely, cute, dumb, funny character...but now all those comments are making more sense to me. I'm not saying that i don't like the show...or that it's not even funny....'cause i really don't know since i haven't seen the show since December and to tell you truth....i don't even miss it. It's nothing compare to Friends...Friends was BIG was?? IS BIG. Yes, Joey is funny and has really good characters and actors (from what i've seen) but it's just not the same. i think tha joey is a great show and has the potential to become a huge success. however it is very rare that shows have the success that friends had, so i wud b suprised if joey did become as successful as friends(i hope it does tho)...also over the years, joey has matured. although he hasnt rele had a serious relationship, he has fallen in love and is starting to look for more serious relationships, so if the show goes on into when joey is in his forties, he will probably have matured a lot more by then n mayb b in a serious relationship n start heading towards marraige...i think it wud actually b rele funny to c joey trying to raise kids but that wud have to b a LONG way off. there is no shortage of storylines that they cud run n there is a lot of potential. hopefully it will reach the success of friends n b on for 10 years, but a tv show with that kind of success is very rare, so unfortunately i wudnt b suprised if it doesnt have as much success as friends

Subtle changes and a discrete new style of gags will change the mood as Joey ages, they wont have to make it a family show but can still change the style.

Yes, Joey is from F.R.I.E.N.D.S., but we have to realize that because its a spin-off...its not going to contain any of the friends(except maybe, guest stars, but that's not likely), and its not going to be about them, in a sense, it kinda picks up where F.R.I.E.N.D.S. left off(getting married, starting their own families, and moving away)..its about Joey, moving to a new city, to further pursue his acting career, adapting to his new surroundings, and all the wacky adventures he has while doing so...

So, we have to try to stop comparing the two shows...they're not the same, and they're not intended to be the same....we should just give it a chance to develop and it could have the potential of becoming a great show ..you just might be surprized! ;) ....and if after all that, you still don't like it? Oh well...but I hope that's not the case... :/

I HOPE Joey does better than Friends but so far I think that may be wishful thinking. I mean Friends will ALWAYS and FOREVER be my favorite sitcom in the whole world and in the whole entire history of TV. And for me, Joey will probably be a close second. Joey was funny because of the other Friends cast. He needs people like Rachel and Chandler to make it really funny.
On his own it's too simple, there's no story at all.

This poll is pointless... you're comparing a sit-com that went for 10 years through 10 seasons with one that just ended it's first season. You just can't compare those..
