With photographers in Rome having captured a magic moment on Thursday – Tom Cruise nuzzling and kissing Katie Holmes – her father, attorney Martin Holmes, has something positive to say about the just-revealed relationship.

"I'm happy and excited for Katie," the elder Holmes tells TV's Access Hollywood. "She has a good head on her shoulders, and we must trust her judgment."

Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, "have been dating a couple of weeks," a friend of Cruise's told PEOPLE this week.

The romance was confirmed by Cruise's rep after he and Holmes were photographed together, hand in hand, in Rome on Wednesday evening. Later, photogs snapped the couple kissing, with Holmes sporting heels making her just a little bit taller than Cruise.

As for Holmes, "she's a really genuine person," says the friend of Cruise. "She's the real deal."

Another source says it was Cruise who made the first move: "He asked her out on a date."

It may have been a fantasy come true for Holmes, who once told Seventeen magazine: "I think every little girl dreams about (her wedding). I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise."

The actress, who launched her career on TV's Dawson's Creek, appears in the summer action film Batman Begins, which opens June 15. Cruise stars in director Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, which hits theaters two weeks later, on June 29.

Cruise split with girlfriend Penelope Cruz last year. He and Nicole Kidman, who have two children, divorced in 2001. He was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers.

Holmes was previously engaged to actor Chris Klein, though they recently broke off their relationship.

I think that their kinda cute together..... and hey!! Don't complain about him being 16 years older than her, Matthew Perry is 21 years older than me and were going to make it work, lol!:P Anyways, I think that their kind of cute together. Whatever makes them both happy satisfies me!:03: :D

If they think it's the real deal I say let them have fun and feel it out for themselves. Theres an age difference but who cares, they're both legal and its not like he's grandpa like or anything.. it's not like a creepy thing.

"Yes, I proposed to her," confirmed Tom on Friday. "It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all."

The A-list couple's open infatuation with one another has provoked speculation their relationship is little more than a publicity stunt. In one incident, during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the actor leaped into the air shouting "I'm in love, I'm in love". The 42-year-old has dismissed suggestions he and Katie are trying to boost their profiles as their latest movies hit cinema screens around the world, however.

"I have to laugh - it's just ridiculous," he said at the European premiere of War Of The Worlds. "Something magnificent has happened to me and something extraordinary, and I'm so happy I just can't restrain myself."

No date has been set for the wedding, but when the glamorous pair do make their vows it is sure to be the celebrity marriage of the year. I think they're cute together, and I really hope it lasts! Sure he's a lot older than her, but you can see she makes him completely happy, and vise versa. Tom is getting older now, and he should settle down with someone. Katie is perfect for him.
