Studios (das später in "The FRIENDS Stage" umbenannt wurde) in Los Angeles drehten die FRIENDS, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry und David Schwimmer, vor ca. 200 geladenen Gästen die letzte Folge der erfolgreichsten amerikanischen Fernsehserie.

DIE LETZTE PRESSEKONFERENZ:

Bereits eine Woche vor den finalen Dreharbeiten luden die FRIENDS ein letztes Mal Vertreter der schreibenden Presse ans Set ein. Auf Regiestühlen sitzend beantworteten die sechs Schauspieler und die drei Produzenten 45 Minuten lang die Fragen der Journalisten. „Das macht uns wirklich fertig“, sagte Jennifer Aniston „Wir haben noch eine Woche übrig und fühlen uns wie zerbrechliches Geschirr das auf eine Wand zurast“. Marta Kauffman fügte hinzu, dass es so ähnlich sei, wie sich von jemanden den man sehr liebt scheiden zu lassen, obwohl man weis das es das richtige ist.
Alle sechs Schauspieler bestätigten, dass es die richtige Zeit war um FRIENDS zu beenden. Courteney Cox erwartet im Juni ein Baby und auch Jennifer Aniston möchte mit Brad Pitt gerne eine Familie gründen. Und Matthew Perry witzelte es wäre Zeit wieder zum Eislauf zurück zu kehren. Die Bemerkung brachte Courteney zum lachen. „Das ist was wir vermissen werden, gemeinsam zu lachen“.
Als die erste Folge im September 1994 ausgestrahlt wurde, sah es nicht nach einer bahnbrechenden Serie aus. Tatsächlich hatten die Kritiker eher die anspruchsvollere Sitcom „Frasier“ auf der Rechnung. Auch Waren Littlefield, der damalige NBC Entertainment Präsident der grünes Licht für die FRIENDS gab meinte die Pilotfolge sei etwas holprig gewesen. „Aber wir sahen den Funken und wussten es könnte etwas werden“, sagte Littlefield, „Doch niemand hatte das vorausgesehen. Es heißt immer man solle das schreiben was man kennt, und Marta Kauffman sowie David Crane lebten dieses Leben in New York. Sie kannten diese Leute, weil sie diese Leute waren. Und das hat sich durchgesetzt“. Die Show hat sich schnell bewiesen und wurde nicht nur zu einer soliden Comedy, sondern zu einer kulturellen Welle die die werbewichtige junge Generation der Zuschauer anzog.
„Der 8 Uhr Platz am Donnerstag war verdammt stark für FRIENDS und jeder fühlt sich mit den Charakteren verbunden“, sagte Kelsey Grammer, der Hauptdarsteller der Serie „Frasier“ die auch dieses Jahr zu Ende geht, in einem früheren Interview, „Das FRIENDS Ende wird ein größeres soziales Phänomen als das Ende von Frasier, und wir akzeptieren das". Ein Zeichen für die soziale Wichtigkeit von FRIENDS war der Anstieg der Zuschauerquoten nach dem 11. September. „Die Menschen schalteten Komfort-TV ein“, sagte Matthew, „weil sie wussten sie könnten sich darauf verlassen, dass wir sie zum lachen bringen“.

Littlefield sagte außerdem, bei den meisten Fernsehshows gäbe es eine Kluft zwischen den Produzenten und den Schauspielern. Aber nicht bei dieser Serie. Die Produzenten wollten während sie die Serie entwickelten mehr über die Schauspieler wissen. „Am Anfang haben uns die Produzenten separat zum Essen eingeladen und stahlen aus unserem Leben, obwohl sie bezahlten“ Matthew dazu, „Ich sagte ich würde versuchen Stille mit Witz auszufüllen (was schließlich auch Chandlers Art wurde)“. Produzent David Crane sagte die Charaktere seien nie stillgestanden, haben sich immer weiter entwickelt. „Wir alle wurden erwachsen“, sagte Matthew zu sich selbst und zu seinem Charakter, „Chandler und Monica haben geheiratet. Und ich habe nicht mehr das Gefühl Stille mit Witz überdecken zu müssen“. David Schwimmer meinte ursprünglich hätten er und sein Charakter viel gemeinsam gehabt. „Da war die Verletzlichkeit und die Faszination für die Wissenschaft. Ich schaue noch immer Discovery Channel und bin ein hoffnungsloser Romantiker, und Familie ist für mich wichtig". Lisa Kudrow dagegen meinte sie hätte anfangs sehr wenig mit ihrem Charakter gemeinsam gehabt, „Phoebe geht so locker mit den Dämonen ihres Lebens um. Ich dagegen verleugne gerne und fühle mich wohl damit. Phoebe wurde etwas realistischer, was mich traurig macht“.
Von Anfang an, sagte David, war etwas magisches in der Beziehung zwischen den Schauspielern. Weil sie sich früh verbündeten konnten sie gemeinsam in Gehaltsverhandlungen gehen. Während der ersten beiden Jahre sahen sich die sechs die Ausstrahlung der Folgen gemeinsam an. Doch langsam schoben sich andere Mensch in ihre Leben, weshalb sie weniger Zeit miteinander verbrachten. Das veränderte jedoch nicht die Chemie zwischen den sechs. „Wir haben uns von Anfang an gut verstanden“, sagte David, „Aber es muss daran gearbeitet werden. Wie in jeder Familie gibt es Spannungen, doch wir konnten immer offen miteinander sprechen und alles aus der Welt schaffen. Das ist der Schlüssel für Langlebigkeit".
NBC Präsident Jeff Zucker sagte die Gerüchte er hätte den Schauspielern jeweils 2 Millionen Dollar für einen Reunion Film geboten seien falsch, „aber ich werde ihnen 4 Millionen Dollar anbieten“. „Wir sind doch noch gar nicht weg“, meinte Jennifer zu dem Gerücht. Tatsächlich können die Fans die sechs noch bis Mai im Fernsehen verfolgen, bis die letzte Folge ausgestrahlt wird. Produzent Kevin Bright meinte die Zuschauer verdienen eine finale Episode, nicht irgend ein Stunt Finale. „Eigentlich ist es nur ein set-up für das FRIENDS reunion movie“, witzelte Matthew dazu.
Werden die Zuschauer also mit dem Finale am 06. Mai zufrieden sein?. "Als einer der größten Fans der Serie bin ich sehr glücklich damit. Ich war sehr zufrieden mit dem Script und denke auch die Fans werden es mögen", sagte David Roth, Präsident von Warner Bros Television dazu.

DER LETZTE DREHTAGE:

Zehn Jahre lang war das Soundstage 24 der Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles acht bis neun Monate im Jahr die tägliche Anlaufstelle für die bis zu 150 Mann große Crew der Fernsehserie FRIENDS. Doch an diesem Freitag, den 23. Januar 2004 war alles anders. Die Aufnahmen für die finalen Folgen 235 und 236 standen auf dem Drehplan. Das Studio ähnelte einem Hochsicherheitstrakt. Nur etwas mehr als 200 gut ausgesuchte Gäste waren geladen, um die Aufnahmen für das große Finale der populärsten Sitcom Amerikas zu sehen. Darunter auch einige Reporter verschiedener Magazine, die uns in ihren Artikeln einen Einblick in den letzten Drehtag geben.
Die Aufnahmen zur letzten FRIENDS Folge veränderten das Set der Comedy in eine sehr dramatische Szene. Auch das „People“ Magazin hatte einen Reporter am Set. Er sagte „Die Tränen sind wie Kaffee geflossen. Jeder hat geweint, auch die Produzenten. Niemand konnte es zurückhalten“. Courteneys Mann, David Arquette sorgte für etwas Auflockerung. Er hatte eine Videokamera dabei und drehte die Fernsehaufnahmen. Der lustigste Moment war wohl, als Courteney einen Satz versaute, und Matthew meinte „Jemand wird wohl gefeuert“. Auch wenn alle längst wussten, dass die zehnte Staffel die letzte sein würde, war es doch hart. Es sieht so aus als hätten diese FRIENDS wirklich Probleme damit Goodbye zu sagen, schilderte ein weiterer Reporter.

Unter den Zuschauern waren neben Courteneys Mann David auch Aisha Tyler und Hank Azaria. Brad Pitt kam nicht zu den Aufnahmen, da er selbst bei Drehaufnahmen war. Außerdem wollte er das Ende gerne im Mai im Fernsehen anschauen, weshalb Jennifer ihm auch nichts verraten darf.
Die Dreharbeiten endeten kurz vor Mitternacht. Zu Sister Sledges "We are Family" tanzte die gesamte Crew auf der Bühne. Minutenlang bekamen die FRIENDS Standig Ovations. Danach wurden die Zuschauer aus dem Studio geführt, damit die letzten Szenen ohne Zuschauer gedreht werden konnten.
Anschliessend feierten Cast, Produzenten und Teile der Crew auf zwei Partys. Eine davon im Haus von Jennifer und Brad. Danach in einem Club in LA. Am nächsten Tag trafen sich dann alle wieder im Park Plaza Hotel für die offizielle Abschlussparty, die Starkoch Wolfgang Puck vorbereitete. Die Schauspieler kamen kurz auf die Bühne für einen Toast, danach tanzten alle bis spät in die Nacht. Neben den Rembrandts, die natürlich auch "I'll be there for you" performten, sang auch Sheryl Crow an diesem Abend. Eintausend Zuschauer waren geladen. Trotzdem war es eine sehr intime Party.
Und zum Abschluß gab es Geschenke. Die Schauspieler erhielten von den Produzenten Jahrbücher mit Bildern und verschiedenen Nachrichten aus allen Jahren. Die sechs FRIENDS Darsteller schenkten den Produzenten Cartier Uhren. Und wie der „People“ Reporter noch berichtet, ließen die Schauspieler mit einer einmotorigen Maschine eine süße Nachricht in den Himmel schreiben. „Damit hatten sie nicht gerechnet. Die Drei waren wirklich gerührt“, sagte Castro vom „People“ Magazin.
So fanden zehn Jahre FRIENDS ihr Ende. Doch die sechs Freunde werden noch ein letztes Mal zusammen kommen. Am Abend der Ausstrahlung der letzten Folge, am 06. Mai 2004, werden sie in der Tonight Show mit Jay Leno zu Gast sein. Gedreht wird ein letztes Mal am Set der Serie.
