I got to choose any person I wanted to write a biography about in my English class. I chose my favorite person in the world, Matthew Perry. I hope you like it! (btw, I got 100% on it:D )
Matthew Langford Perry, although most know him as the witty, sarcastic Chandler from Friends, was born on August 19, 1969 in Williamstown, Massachusetts. When he was only a year old, he moved to Ottawa, Canada because of his parents divorced and he lived there most of his childhood. Before he was an actor, he played tennis, and at age 15 ranked 17th nationally in the junior singles and 3rd in the doubles. He soon got his first feel for acting when playing Arriba Arriba Geneva in the classic, The Life and Death of Sneaky Fitch, in a performance class. Matthew had said himself, “After I got my first laugh onstage, I was hooked.”
In 1984, he moved to Los Angeles to live with his father, actor John Bennett Perry. He had intended to go to the University of Southern California, but he was offered the lead role on the television series Second Chance, and he took the offer. Perry decided to start writing on his own in 1993 when he wrote his own pilot called "Maxwell's House." It was bought by Universal Studios. Shortly after selling it, he landed a role on a
comedy called "Friends," which, coincidentally, was very similar to the pilot he wrote. After getting the role of Chandler, Matthew’s career took off, and he has starred in many successful movies such as The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards, Serving Sara, Three To Tango, and Fools Rush In.
Sadly, not all of Perry’s life has been glamour and movie-stardom. On June 4th, 1997, it was reported that he checked into a drug rehab center because he was suffering from chemical dependency on a prescription medication. Matthew said himself, "Vicodin, I got addicted to that little pill. The reason I don't talk about it too much in the press is because it isn't funny, and I love to be funny in interviews. If you joke about that period in your life, it doesn't seem right." On February 27, 2001, Perry stopped filming Serving Sara to enter a rehabilitation clinic for an undisclosed treatment. Matthew has been clean since then.
I am a fan of Matthew Perry for many reasons. He just seems like the kind of person I’d like to have hanging around me. He is always so funny and kind in interviews, and he really seems like a down-to-earth type of guy. "Well, I was lucky enough to be involved in about 19 failures at an early age, so I'm realistic about the success I'm having and how quickly it can go away. What's important is to be smart about it," Matthew commented. He has also said many comments about being the comical person he is, like, "The goal is to have to do the shot again because the camera guy shook a little bit as he was laughing. Without that happening, I'm not happy because there's nothing better for me than a world that everybody's just trying to make each other laugh." Matthew also seems like someone I can relate to when he said, "I was the coolest guy of the non-cool crowd."
Matthew Perry is a very interesting person with a wonderfully witty sense of humor that always keeps me laughing. Even though he has had hardships in his life just like anyone else, he still has a positive way to look at life.
