Hey, I know before on the forum there was a great thread about certian lines in the show that people didn't get...
Well since there's a few newbies here (including myself) I thought it would be good fun (and very helpful!) to start a new one :)
I'll start with a line I don't get..
In TOW The Routine, when Phoebe and Rachel find Monica's presents and try to open them, then Chandler tries to talk them out of it, Rachel says "Whatever Linus I'm opening mine!"
What's that mean?

i dont really get that joke either,i get the actual theme of the joke but i dont know who or what 'linus' is

Linus is a character from the cartoon Snoopy:
"Linus Van Pelt inspired the term "security blanket" with his classic pose. He is the intellectual of the gang, and flabbergasts his friends with his philosophical revelations and solutions to problems. He suffers abuse from his big sister, Lucy, and the unwanted attentions of Charlie Brown's little sister, Sally. He is a paradox: despite his age, he can put life into perspective while sucking his thumb. He knows the true meaning of Christmas while continuing to believe in the Great Pumpkin."

OK, now it's my turn to say what I don't understand:
In TOW The Prom Video, when Joey see what Ross looked like in the 80s, Joey says "Lookin' good Mr. Cotter."
What does that mean?
Duffers!

I think he says Mister Carter... you might be right though... However I don't know what he means either! But it's sooo funny the way he says it!

Oh, I got the quote from here:
http://www.friendscafe.org/scripts/s2/214.shtml
I didn't understand what it said so I just looked it up, copied and pasted.
Anyway, I don't know who Mr Carter is, any chance it could be President Carter??
EDIT: I saw ictures of president carter and he doesn't have a beard or look anything like it but it's the only very famous carter I know. I'll keep thinking about it

Hmm I do not know, how could we find out... You're the one who found out the last one so we can't wait for you! I'll try and look

I found out the other one because I always knew who Linus was because I LOVE that cartoon. Not because I have a talent for finding jokes people don't understand ;)
Anyway, I'll look for pictures of all the Mr Carters I can think of ;)
Duffers!

And I'll look for Cotters!

10-02-2004, 03:41 PM
It's Mr. Cotter, not Carter. And it's from an old TV show called "Welcome Back, Cotter". He called him that because Mr. Cotter had an afro and mustache, so they looked a lot alike.

I just watched that bit with subtitles in Spanish and instead of saying "looking good Mr Carter" it translates it as "Looking good Mr John travolta"
Does that have ANYTHING to do with it????
PS" Knowing the kotter thing and watching the pictures it IS funny!

Did you really have to post the same thing twice? Whatever, it's the same thing. I dunno how to spell it. I just know it's not Carter.

It's Kotter, and yeah John Travolta played a character on 'Welcome Back Kotter" as one of the students. His name could have been Carter, I don't remember. But the quote is Kotter well because its obvious he had a striking resemblence to Kotter. Afro and the stache'.

i think the whole jist of the joke was for most people not to know what that meant so we could relate to joey not being as smart as the others.
i dont think the algonquin thing is necessarily a joke.. the funny part was joey just not knowing what it was

I found this:
The Algonquin Round Table was a clique of witty writers in the 1920's and has nothing to do with Algonquins or American Indians at all; they named themselves after the hotel they lunched at. Don't get confused into picking up one of the many books about them.
There's information on the tribe in this web page:

ok, how about the one line from uh.. cant remember exactly which ep, i think TOW the Jellyfish.. when Ross and Rachel are laying in bed together, then they argue and Ross runs out, and as he's going out the door, Rachel shouts "Just so you know, it's not that common, it doesn't happen to every guy, and it IS a big deal!" and then Chandler jumps from behind the door and says "I knew it!"
anyone know what this is about? lol

10-02-2004, 04:58 PM
It's either about premature ejaculation or not getting it up in the first place, I only say the first one because Rachel made a reference to it TOW Ross and Rachel you know... but it's probs one of the two

I'm pretty sure she's talking about when the guy can't perform sexually. Women usually say "it's very common, it happens to every guy and it's not a big deal" but she denied everything she had probably told Ross when he couldn't "get up" some time, because she was so angry she wanted to hurt him.

So having cocktails with them was like having cocktails in Appalachia, because Monica thought Angela and Bob were siblings.

okay, I got one. It's from Joey though..not Friends.
In the pilot, Alex says "Well if it helps, I had a really rough day at work too. The company I represent can't drill for oil in Yosemite."
Then the audience laughs, but I don't get how it's funny.
Ross Is Boss
10-03-2004, 04:53 PM
Theres a bout 3.5 billion barrels worth of oil down there. Which is a lot. Enough supply to last the whole US about a half of year. So the fact that they can't or couldn't shows the stupidity of the company or something... or it could be due to the fact the Bush Admin isn't letting anyone touch that oil. There have been quite numerous amount of political jokes on the NBC sitcoms so I wouldn't doubt it. Pretty sophisticated Joke or it could have been just as simple as being a situation far more sophisticated than Joey's problem which was what made it funny.

K I got another one...
In TOW The Girl From Poughkipsie/Poughkeepsie (lol)
When Chandler tells his friends from work that Rachel is just looking for a fling and Rachel gets really mad...
Rachel: You told this guy that I was looking for a fling?! You don’t tell the guy that!
Chandler: Why not?! I’d be thrilled if I heard that some hot girl was just looking to get—oh I see.
Why does Chandler suddenly have a realisation at the end? What is it he suddenly gets and what was so horrible about saying about the flig?

WHAT IN GODSNAME IS TIVO?
(also possibly Teevo)
It is mentioned in TOW Rachel tells her father she is pregnant (not the title, that's what happens). He asks her what's new and instead of telling him, she says "I got Tivo", which Phoebe then says is slang for pregnant although it isn't.
It's also in Sex and the City. Miranda gets it then her maid does something to it and it doesn't work??? I am very confused.

ok...TiVo is this...device..sorta thing...its like a VCR but without a tape. you set it and it automatically saves your shows so you can watch them whenever you want. theres no tapes or anything, it just saves your show so you can watch it whenever. i saw the SATC episode with miranda, and her maid accidently set the TiVo so it wouldnt record miranda's show...rachel's dad didnt know what Tivo was, so phoebe just said it was slang for pregnant

The episode is Tow Phoebe´s uterus (ep 84) and if I remember it correctly now the reason why rachel says "Ooh, I can´t watch this, it´s like Sophies choice" is probably that Phoebe had to make the decition whether to became a surrogate mother or not.

Hey guys!!!! So, here i go!! i'm gonna tell what the Sophie's choice is about!!! If you intend to see the movie or read the book, Stop right here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Basically the movie tells a history about a woman ( Sophie) who lived through the 2º world war, and had to stay in a nazi concentration camp with both of her kids, a little boy and a little girl. They were separated and they couldn't see each other, but in the end they got together because the soldiers decided to let some people leave the camp. They made a list of the people that could leave, and Sophie was in it. But she couldn't take both of her kids, but then, one of the soldiers decided to let her take one of them with her. The other one would have to stay and go to the gas chamber. It's really sad, cause she scream's out that she can't decide between them, so the soldier says that if she didn't pick one, both of them would have to go to the gas chamber!!! She had to decide which one of her kids should live. She cries, and says to the soldier: Take my little girl!!!! Then he takes the baby girl, and she stars to cry!!!!!
It really broke my heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Hey everyone, I'm new but I love Frieds just as much as all of you!
Anyway, there's one joke in a recent episode- (season 10) where Ross and Rachel are talking about one time in the past where they slept together, and they say something like this:
Rachel: Remember it was your birthday
Ross: (at the same time) Valentines day
Then they both say "Oh yeah!"
I don't get that joke, can someone explain it for me? :)

Remember that after that, they start telling secrets about each other, and then Monica calls Ross Pampers, y' know the diaper. So it means he had diarrhea, and that's the South town of throwing up that Monica meant.:03:

I know Welsh people and I've been to Wales and that's no Welsh accent! Anyway, the Mark Thomas you've accredited is the wrong one. There is another accreditation for Mark Thomas http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0859210/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD1vbnxzZz0xfHE9bWFyayB0aG9tYXN8cG 49MHxteD0yMHxsbT0yMDB8bm09b258aHRtbD0x;fc=6;ft=33
which says that he was born in Brooklyn in 1941, which I also find hard to believe! So if anyone can explain the accent it's still open!
^ We think it was just to break a long emotional scene. We all thought that they were getting back together, but Rachel just snaps out and says the line. Can't explain why it's funny now, but it's a funny bit whilst watching.

I think it's funny because of all the work they went through to get the papers, and then to get each other to sign them, etc. At the end, it sort of seemed that they were almost reluctant to finish out the whole process, but Rachel needs to have a copy of the divorce papers to give to her lawyer, for any legal purposes to settle the case between them.

A spotter is a person who well spots someone while they are doing excercises so you don't get hurt, like when someone is lifting weights. Chandler just said it because Ross was suppose to help Chandler quit the gym, but instead Ross became a member of the gym and started working out, and in turn Chandler did not quit the gym.
Hope that helps you...sorry if it is confusing, i think i confused myself while trying to explain it. :D

It´s a scene in Tow Joey´s big break that I don´t get, its´when Chandler and Joey are heading to Las Vegas.
Chandler: Yeah, listen, how cold is it going to be there? Do I need a coat or will all these sweater vests be enough?
(Monica stares at him.)
Chandler: What?
Monica: I love you.
What did she mean when she said I love you? Is it that he´s going away without her and is packing something as non-trendy as sweatervests in different colors and therefore he won´t hook up with someone else or what is it?
unagi
01-15-2005, 11:15 AM
No she was worried he'd be embarrassed with everyone staring at him and him looking uncool so she said I love you to make him feel better (it's always nice to hear a compliment) and it changes the subject and makes him feel better. It could also be an I still love you even though you're uncool. That's my theory anyway. The Chandler sweater vests were referenced in TOW Everyone Finds Out for comedy effect. "I just wanna rip that...sweater vest right off you"
PS. gumpykisy, you did clear that up thanks!
To me, that means, she's laughing at him, as a old person would ask them sort of questions. Like when your nans and grandads say - wrap up in lots of layers to keep warm as you don't want a chill. I don't think she meant how 'uncool' that is :P

2. In TOW Ross gets married, Chandler makes a joke about "Monty Hall." What does this mean?

1. Since Joey wanted to keep the museum geeks down to a limit so Ross suggested only the "dinosaur dudes", and I guess the joke is that they are geeks haven't been to many parties so they won't be able to hold their liquer so Joey says he needs to get a six pac of Zima which is a non alcoholic drink.
2. Ross and Emily were getting married at Montgomery Hall and he was trying to make a joke, which was a bad joke, about getting married in Monty Hall. Monty Hall is a host of many old game shows and the one he is most famous for "Let's Make A Deal".

OK, let's ressurect this topic lol.
On TO That Could've Been Part One, Joey says "What if I'd have never gotten fired off of Days Of Our Lives" and then he says "Ah, there's Carol again"
Does anyone know what this is about?
miss.Geller

Personally i think it means,he would be happy if he hadnt have been fired, and carol comes into his mind, she is a lesbian and he must like fantasising about Carol,so they must be his happy thoughts,i dont really know how to explain it,but thats what i think.
So when he thinks of good things,he automatically thinks of Carol,as he has expressed before in the show he likes the thought of lesbians, hence joey being all joey.

I think that's because they were talking about Carol being a lesbian earlier and Joey was fantasizing about it because.. well, he's Joey (lol) and then he said about Days of Our Lives and then Carol popped into his head cuz he was thinking of it earlier or sumthing. at least that's wut I think.

Hi everybody !!
i'm new here and i'm glad to have found -ed (:04:) such a great place to discuss about my favourite show EVER !
this thread is so cool and i learnt a lot of things through the pages !
there's a thing i don't get, in TOW noone's ready, when Joey says he goes 'commando', i mean i understand that he's not wearing underwear (that's what i understood) but it's the 'commando' thing that i don't get, is it just an expression in America or does it refer to something else ?
regan21286
03-27-2005, 12:41 AM
Maybe it's cuz real commando's don't wear underwear for combat missions? That might make sense cuz they really don't need it.
Gum-Would-Be-Perfection

I think they call it "going commando" because then...you're always "ready for action"..haha, that's what it says when I looked it up on this website.

On the programme 'How friends changed the world' I think the producer said he made that phase up 'commando' which means its a new word for wearing no underwear :)

Yeah, commando probably means either "out in the open" or "ready for action" (according to Urban Dictionary).
Here's a question. I know it's an old joke but in TOW The Cuffs, the salesman asked "Where does the Pope live?" and Joey answered "In the Woods". Could someone explain this joke?

Joey saying 'in the woods' is because i think he thinks it's a joke and wanna prove he knows the answer to the joke but the book guy was asking a real question and that is just on more occasion to show how Joey is a dummy and that's why we all like him ! :)

well maybe i'm weird, but since it's a play about Freud and he's saying that to a woman, i think he's talking about a penis, and that seems to make sense since Joey is very proud because he thinks it's a great play and doesn't really understand what he's saying, and that's why all the other friends have that weird look at the end of the play...

Yes I LOVE That song *points at signature*
It uses A LOT of slang which I'll translate for you the best I can. First you need to understand (if you didn't know it before) that Freud was this shrink who came up with the whole penis envy bull*** (basically saying women felt inferior to men because they didn't have a penis, I think) and the whole Edipus complex which means you're in love with your parents of the opposite sex of you (if you're a girl, your dad, if you're a guy, your mom).

They're saying Erica had a kind of sex that doesn't get you pregnant so Chandler asked which kind.

I think it's because Nate is what we call in Britain a "chav" (I don't know what they call them in America) and when he wears jeans he wears them about 10 sizes too big so they hang down and shows off his boxer shorts. I think it looks absolutely terrible, and obviously Monica does too. I think that's what it is.
It also goes to the fact that everyone in the agency was much younger than M/C and it's kind of a style amongst the younger generation.
I don't think Nate slept with the boss as Chandler said that Susan was the person who slept with the boss later on after we find out that Nate got the first post (your quote's a bit mixed up! :) )
Hope this helps.

Kim is a very common name in Korea(at least we in the western parts of the world have that image) and put together with one of Chandler's favourite expressions: Could there be more....Kims?
Princess_Consuela

It's because Kim is THE last name in Korea. It's like almost every Korean person is called Kim ;) (just exagerating)
It's kinda like Smith or Taylor or even worse, I dunno what could be the equivalent in the USA but if you see an oriental person with last name Kim it's probably Korean.

Princess_Consuela
04-01-2005, 06:58 PM
The fun part of it being messy is that Monica is SOOO obsessed with everything being tidy that admitting she had a mess was a shame for her. It was her secret, a mess, the thing you would expect the least from Monica, it proved she wasn't perfect, it proved she was normal and she was afraid that people would find out that she's not all that obsessive about being clean and tidy and would stop liking her for that, or, even worse, stop doing what she says (in terms of being tidy) because of that. Mainly afraid of losing authority for having a mess and proving to be normal.

in TOW with the Ball, in the very beginning when Gary calls Phoebe Babydoll, Chandler says 'I can't pull off "baby doll", can I' and Monicareplies 'No i think we learned that from the "sugar lips" incident'
what does that mean ?
It means that chandler tried to call Monica sugar lips once and it sounded very ridiculous....so probably it will be ridiculous if he calls her baby doll too

in the uncut version of the one with ross's wedding there is a part i dont get....when phoebe and rachel are in monica and rachel's apartment phoebe is telling rachel how obvious it is that rachel still likes ross but then she says....
Phoebe: Well, because we though you knew!! It's so obvious! God, that would be like telling Monica, "Hey, you like things clean." Or, y'know, "Hey, Joey you're gay."
(Rachel stares at her.)
Rachel: What?!
Phoebe: Oh, please! She's always got a broom in her hand!
Why does phoebe say Joey is gay and what does she mean about the whole broom thing???

This is more of a cultural difference, probably due to differences in the American wedding system.
In TO After Vegas, Ross says "We register, and you get to keep all the gifts"
What is registering (I thought that you were registered after a wedding) and do they not get gifts until they register their wedding.
Also, in TOW Princess Consuela, why did she have to go to the government office just to change her surname? Doesn't she get the right to change her surname instantly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

^ So does this not refer to registering your marriage legally? And don't people make up wedding lists and get their gifts at the wedding (once again, maybe a cultural difference)?
Princess_Consuela
04-10-2005, 10:17 PM
No, it isn't talking about registering your marriage legally, that happens automatically when you get married, you receive a certificate and a marriage license, the license is valid for more things than the certificate but they're both proofs of marriage. If you get married in a church, they issue an instant certificate but the license takes about 2 weeks to be processed whereas if you get married at the council's office you get everything right away. You register for presents before the wedding and they either mail them to you before the wedding or they give them to you on your wedding day, but he was just trying to convince Rach of staying married so he thought of the presents to "bribe" her even if it was a little too late. When you elope, people usually give you presents when they find out you got married, so it's not such a big deal.
The second question is like this: when you get married your name doesn't automatically change to your husband's name, some people never even bother to change it and keep their maiden name forever. The women who do change it have to go to the social security office to get their name officialy changed so that their social security number will always match with the name she decides to use, her husband's name. Once you've changed it in the SS office you need to get your drivers license or ID card changed to your married name.
I hope it helped.

What rachel is talking about that Ross had some problems in bed before. At that time she had told him that it was not such a big deal, but then she changed her mind and told him that it was a big deal just to hurt him. Chandler says "I knew it" because he had had that kind of problems in the past and he had heard that comment before from some other woman. Ok, here in America, when you get engaged, you pick your favortie department store (Bed, Bath & Beyond or Macy's or something like that). When you go there, you make a list of all the things you would need/like to have for when you and your fiance get married. Stuff like dishes, linens, kitchen appliances, vacuum cleaners, candleholders, etc. and the people that come to your wedding will know what to get you. It prevents you from getting 8 toasters, 5 coffee makers, and 12 blenders. :04: So, what Ross is trying to do is lure Rachel into staying married with him with the promise of her getting to keep all those gifts that people would have gotten them had they had a real wedding. \
And in TOW Princess Consuela...: Here in the States you have to go to the Social Security Office to get your name changed legally. When you do this, then a few days/weeks later, you get your new social security card stating your new name with your social security number you've always had.
Hope this helped clear things up!

In the episode TOW a Chick and a Duck, the conversation goes like this:
Phoebe: Okay, well they are a huge responsibility, especially at this age. They require constant care. They-they need just the right food, and lot’s and lot’s of love.
Joey: Oh, well no problem there. (He picks up the chick, hugs it really tight, and talks to it like it’s a little baby.)

They bursted out into laughter because it was a funny line, and Jen and Lisa just kept cracking up.
And Chandler's avatar just says this if you can't read it...
Jen: You're my best friend Court.
Court: You're my best friend too Jen!
Jen: Wanna make out?
Court: I don't really think my husband would approve of that, and I dont really want to.
Jen: *Blush* I was just testing you.
...Or something along those lines, lol.
lol, i'd make out with Jen any day of the week.

okay i have one from the bloopers on season seven, rachel and phoebe are sitting on the couch..and rachel says "..alright i guess ill just see if the can cancel it, or maybe they can just put eyes on the hoochies.." and the burst into laughter--but i dont understand why that is so funny?--well possibly because i dont get it
They were talking about the penis shaped cake they had ordered for Monica's bachelorette party and since Monica said she wouldn't like it, they were trying to find ways to turn it into a bunny (or a microphone with two tennis balls underneath ;) for Joey). They burst into laughter because they had the mental image of a penis-shaped cake turned into a bunny which is a hilarious image. ;)

Ooh yeah, that's why they were talking about it. Couldn't remember. They also said they could write NASA down the side and give it to Ross...the thought of that cracks me up :P

It is too funny!!! So so funny!!! The bloopers make the whole thing even funnier!
And I think Chandler's avatar says that because he fantasizes about Jen and Court making out ;)

What about The One With Ross' Wedding when Pheobe call Joey on the when Joey is lying on his bed. Pheobe says to him something like 'I just saw a guy on the subway that looks like you and I was gonna go over to him and say he looks like you. But then I relised he doesn't care that he looks like you.' Then Joey says 'Thanks Pheebs that jsut cost me 10 bucks'. I don't understand that at all?

It's because it's an international call. Calls from UK to the USA are expensive, and because it's a hotel it would be even more expensive. As he's paying more for the call, he wanted to be quick but Phoebe was talking nonsense and it annoyed him (suprising higher logic coming from Joey...!)
Does this explain it?

yea, international phone calls are very expensive. and she was talking on and on and telling a pointless story which sarcastically he said "that just cost him 10 bucks"..meaning like that story couldnt have waited until you saw me instead she told him over an expenisve international phone call.

OK I got one:
"Monica: Look, these clowns are trying to take us for a ride and I'm not gonna let 'em! And we're not a couple of suckers!
Chandler: I hear ya, Mugsy! But look, all these rooms are fine okay? Can you just pick one so I can watch-(realizes)-have a perfect, magical weekend together with you."
What's up with the "mugsy" comment?
